Course Description

Studio Art 1 is a course for 11th or 12th graders who have a strong interest in making art and exploring various tactile, hands-on, 2D methods and materials to create with. Experience and previous training isn't necessary; but students need to be committed to developing ideas and using drawing as a means for recording ideas. The structure of course is designed for students to develop their artistic voice while also learning about periods and specific artist's in history who have innovated an approach to art-making; as well as the social context of that artist's aesthetic goals. While developing an understanding of Art history of the 20th century and developing a unique artistic vision in the 21st century; students will learn and implement their understanding of the fundamental Elements and Principles of Design and Color Theory while expressing their ideas. The Studio Art 1 course emphasizes celebration of global and U.S. cultural experiences, as well as visualizing individual and personal perspectives; while challenging students to grow and develop both their skills and viewpoints. Students will develop a solid foundation and advanced students will receive additional individual instruction to further their knowledge, skill, and experience in drawing, painting, collage, and printmaking hands-on art-making assignments. The final project of the course is a symbolic self portrait painting which will be exhibited on the Legacy Wall.
