Course Description

A high school Chinese 1 class is an introductory course designed for students with little to no prior knowledge of the Chinese language. The course is designed to provide a foundation in Chinese pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and basic conversational skills. Students will be introduced to Chinese characters, their meanings, and the stroke order required to write them. They will also learn how to read and write Pinyin, which is the system used to transcribe Chinese characters into the Roman alphabet. Additionally, students will learn basic Chinese grammar, such as sentence structure and verb conjugation. The focus of the class will be on developing listening and speaking skills, with an emphasis on pronunciation and tone. Students will be exposed to a variety of topics related to Chinese culture, history, and daily life. They will learn to introduce themselves, ask and answer simple questions, and engage in basic conversations. Throughout the course, students will also have the opportunity to learn about Chinese customs and traditions, such as the Chinese New Year, Mid-Autumn Festival, and other important cultural celebrations. By the end of the class, students should be able to communicate in basic Chinese and have a solid foundation for further study of the language.
