Course Description

Grade 7 English is a comprehensive reading and writing course in which students work to develop the skills of close analytical readers, active, empathetic listeners, effective writers and speakers, skilled presenters, and critical thinkers. Through direct, explicit instruction in writing, students explore their ideas about texts and learn to meet the multiple demands of writing. Students write argumentive, informative/explanatory, and narrative pieces. Additionally, students will sharpen their ability to cite evidence from multiple sources to support ideas and arguments and effectively apply their knowledge of central idea, craft and structure, and purpose. This course places an emphasis on using context and morphological awareness to expand vocabulary, engine in discussion, and make connections to historical and current events and other works of literature. Students read a variety of texts, from classic to contemporary, including short stories and poetry collections, Brown Girl Dreaming, Stamped by Jason Reynolds, Flesh & Blood So Cheap: The Triangle Fire & Its Legacy by Albert Marrin, The Tempest by William Shakespeare among others.
