Course Description

All students are welcome to join Beginner Band. Previous experience is not required. Beginner Band teaches students the fundamentals of instrumental playing and reading music. Boston Latin Academy’s Instrumental Music Program offers students the fundamentals for beginning, developing, and proficiency on a concert band instrument. This involves reading music, performing on an instrument, understanding music’s historic relativity, and developing an understanding of interpretation through knowledge of styles, theory, and creativity. Throughout each school year students will continuously build upon their musical foundation with a daily routine of singing, clapping, playing, homework, preparation, and performance opportunities such as concerts, showcases, and productions. This course requires students to practice daily and complete playing assignments. An Instrumental Rental program is offered to all students who do not own their own instrument.Students are placed within one of four instrument families based on their choice of instrument: Flute/Oboe: Flute, Oboe Clarinet/Saxophone: Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone Brass: Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba Percussion *Percussionists learn all percussion instruments: Snare Drum, Bass Drum, Mallet Instruments, Timpani, Auxiliary Percussion
